Beeson Creek

Kernersville, North Carolina

LDSI partnered with Jennings Environmental and North State Environmental on the Beeson Creek Restoration Project, which was implemented beginning in 2018. The project focuses were improving water quality, aquatic habitats, and community education while providing access to a healthy riparian ecosystem in the Yadkin River Basin. Before the project, streambanks were eroding due to channel incision, excessive near-bank stress, and poor riparian vegetation.  Aquatic habitats were poor due to embedded substrate and plane-bed morphology lacking distinct pools and natural grade controls.

The 2000 LF design restoration included channel realignment and floodplain connection to create an equilibrium meandering riffle-pool stream. The design also included wood toe revetments as well as boulder and log structures to prevent erosion, manage hydraulic energy, and enhance the aquatic habitat. The finished project contained constructed stormwater wetlands, a nature trail for public access and education, and a plan for long-term monitoring to document stream restoration effectiveness.
